Culms erect, smooth, 2-6 m tall, 1-2.5 cm in diam., internodes 20-35 cm long; nodes minutely prominent; branches usually 3, but sometimes numerous in clusters.
Sheath of culm deciduous, coriaceous, hard, brittle, pale greenish purple when young, pale-brown when mature, densely hairy outside, margins entire; auricles of sheath small with few short brown bristles; ligule of sheath truncate; blade of sheath subulate, acute, entire. Leaves 1-3, usually single at tip of a branchlet, oblong-lanceolate or oblong, 10-25 cm long, 2-3.5 cm broad, acute, base cuneate, veins 7-9, veinlets 7, tessellate, margins nearly entire; petioles 7-10 cm long auricles of leaf inconspicuous; ligule of leaf convex, rounded, aristate; sheath of leaf glabrous outside.
